Drawing 1, Solon High School
In drawing 1, we have been working on contour line drawings. I did a still life of an old tea pot. I had trouble with the lid, and I could use some more practice on recognizing compound shapes. Overall, I feel that this drawing was successful with the use of weight and implied lines.
Our second assignment was to either do a grid transfer in color or pencil. I chose to do a graphite drawing of a pair of headphones. I worked on stylizing it to be my own. I tried to imitate a wood craving style, with sharp thick edges. For value I used varying line weights and spacing. I had a lot of fun experimenting with new styles on this piece. |

This is my first observational charcoal drawing, and really my first attempt at using charcoal in general. I've done some drawings from observations before so I thought this would be a piece of cake, but my inexperience with the medium made it a whole lot more difficult. I had to practice with many rough sketches to practice treating the charcoal less like a pencil and more like wet media. It was hard for me to not outline shapes and let the values do most of the talking in this piece, but over all it turned out pretty nicely. You just have to trust the process.
Our instructor assigned us a white chalk portrait project. We took photos in specific lighting, mine of a classmate, and worked off the photos to create this work over a couple weeks. The thing I liked most about doing this was that when using the black paper you have to build up the highlights instead of putting in the shadows. It just is cool to be going about it with a different mind set. Glasses made this portrait a pain, but I'm glad I put them in because it really adds to her character. This work is an in process piece that I hope to take to competition in the spring. I'm having so much fun trying out ink washes to create an old newspaper look. I'm trying to achieve a narrative of the aftermath from the biblical story of Adam and Eve. One in which Eve gets her revenge on the serpent by making him into a pair of boots. I'll be adding more watercolor and some colored pencil to add some emphasis to important features. |

For our first project, we were assigned to a color wheel. Most people were doing some form of a mandala so I decided to do mine in a similar style but depicting a fox. I thought I did a nice job of using red, blue, and yellow to mix the rest of my secondary and tertiary colors. It was hard fro me to stray from my usual use of thick black outlines.
We then had a pop art project done with a grid transfer. Mine is of two koi fish. I used a sponge technique to achieve the muddled water border. The blue, yellow-orange, and red-orange are an example of a split color scheme. I love that I used different muted colors to make the bubbles in the background. This third picture is of an in process still life. I tried using a palette knife, and though it is more difficult for me to use than a brush, I really like the visual texture it gives it. I want to try working on bringing more blues and yellows and oranges into things such as the vase. |
